The formerly conjoined twins, Carl & Clarence Aguirre, prepare to celebrate the one-year anniversary of their separation surgery.

Dr. David Staffenberg performs the second-stage of a complex plastic surgery operation for an 8 year-old boy from El Salvador with Crouzon syndrome.

The first stage was reported in The Daily News on February 13, 2005.

February 11, 2005 on an 8 year-old boy from El Salvador
with Crouzon syndrome.

Internal distraction osteogenesis was used to advance his midface.

The twins are declared one of the top news stories of the year.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is joined by (from left)Drs. James Goodrich, Spencer Foreman, president of Montefiore Medical Center and David Staffenberg at City Hall. Goodrich and Staffenberg led the surgical team that separated conjoined twins Carl & Clarence Aguirre at Montefiore in August.

Bloomberg presented the three with the Mayor's Award for Excellence in Science & Technology.
